Hyakugo Bank and Nihon Unisys have teamed up to develop the BankVision online banking system, which has gone live. BankVision is an open banking system developed for Microsoft Windows Server and SQL Server.

This new banking system solidifies the position of Hyakugo Bank as Japan’s top regional bank. It will now be possible to offer all of Hyakugo Bank’s clients the latest high-value added services in a timely and personalised fashion.

Derived from Hyakugo Bank’s long years of banking experience and Nihon Unisys’s long years of technological experience building banking systems, and based on research by the S-BITS Consortium2 into online banking needs, BankVision is the first full banking system3 in the world designed for Windows Server and SQL Server.

BankVision is a banking system based on component architecture that was originally developed by Nihon Unisys using object-oriented design combined with a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach. With BankVision, what before could only be done on a mainframe can now be done on an open system, including instant switching for foolproof troubleshooting, and nonstop 24/365 operations.

In December of 2003, Hyakugo Bank announced that they would be working with Nihon Unisys as the model bank in the development of a new next-generation banking system. The decision was made to adopt the object development/mission critical4 support model fully exploiting the features of Windows Server and SQL Server that was proposed by Nihon Unisys because Hyakugo Bank felt that doing so would better enable Hyakugo Bank to fulfill the three tenets of our FRONTIER BANKING corporate statement: to try to deliver the most advanced customer service in Japan; to provide cutting-edge services and financial products; and to provide satisfaction that exceeds customer expectations.

Nihon Unisys has used Windows Server and SQL Server to build mission-critical systems for a broad range of corporations. This project was initiated in December of 2003 with the aim of developing a full banking system for Windows Server and SQL Server, which offers the world’s highest level of stability and safety.

Real systems were used during development for the purpose of verifying the various elements required by mission critical systems, including high-level availability, processing power, and strong security.

BankVision for Hyakugo Bank was the first system in this project to go online.

Development of BankVision progressed smoothly and went through a scrupulous testing phase before ATM service began on May 6, 2007 at Hyakugo Bank, and general service began at all branches nationwide on May 7.

Hyakugo Bank will maximise the benefits of BankVision by offering longer ATM hours and teller service on holidays, and will continue to expand the range of products and services offered to regional clients by in order to flexibly adapt to changing financial systems and business models.

Nihon Unisys, in turn, will continue to expand the functionality of BankVision in order to meet the needs of client banks by sharing the knowledge gained from this project with banks that are planning to adopt the system, including Kiyo Bank, Chikuho Bank, Bank of Saga, Eighteenth Bank, and Kagoshima Bank.

According to the companies, the main features of BankVision are as follows:

  • Provides a system that is highly flexible to change. Components are installed using the object development method in order to determine the objects best suited to a particular bank’s operations, and these are developed into components (products) for each service using the SOA approach.
  • Uses tableware to rapidly provide new products and services specifically tailored to a particular client group, or to modify bank management strategies or income structures.
  • Creation of a portable system using the MIDMOST open financial processing infrastructure makes it possible to maintain a perfect balance between cost and stability.
  • Improves the efficiency and fluency of the entire banking system by providing the full range of services on the Unisys Enterprise Server ES7000, a mission-critical server with a sturdy architecture, and on the global standard open platforms, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Datacentre Edition and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition.
  • Laborsaving and checking functions help streamline work at branches.
  • Functions patterned on operation/transaction models make it possible to flexibly and rapidly draft and build a branch strategy and business structure.
