Over 6.34 million PCs were sold in India in 2006-07, showing that PC sales are not just thriving but companies and homes are buying more of computers.
In fact the best trend can be seen in laptop whose sales have been doubling every year. According to data by Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT), the apex body representing all hardware players, computer sales grew by 26 per cent. According to MAIT projections, PC sales will touch 8 million units in fiscal 2007-08, given the strong macroeconomic conditions and buoyant buying sentiment in the market.
MAIT said, in FY07, notebook and laptop sales grew 97 per cent while desktop sales grew 19 per cent.
Laptops accounted for 13 per cent of the total PC market in 2006-07 against about 9 per cent a year ago. While notebook PC consumption in the business segment grew 41 per cent, reducing prices has led to a five-fold growth in households that accounted for more than a fifth of the total notebooks market, MAIT said.
The business segment accounted for 74 per cent of the total PC sales in FY07 while the home PC market grew about 23 per cent. While the sale of PCs to factories and SMEs remained low, large enterprises registered a growth of 69 per cent in buying computers, MAIT said. “Demand was highest from the telecom, banking and financial service sectors, education and BPO/ITeS.” |
