IT bellwether Infosys made headlines this week revealing intentions of acquiring UK based SAP consulting company Axon for USD 753.1 billion.

“The strategic combination of our groups will accelerate the realization of our common aspiration - that of becoming the most respected provider of business transformational services in the global marketplace,” said Infosys' CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan in a statement found on the company’s website.

Axon, which focuses on technology-enabled transformation programs, has some 2000 employees located in offices in the UK, North America, Malaysia and Australia.

Infosys is India's second-largest software services exporter trailing after its biggest rival Tata Consultancy Services.

Commenting on the acquisition, Mr Kapil Dev Singh, Country Manager, IDC India said, "The acquisition signals a trend among Indian IT services firms to enhance their focus from low hanging maintenance kind of services, with a higher bias for top line growth, to high-end domain services that could add more to the bottom line."

"It is first of the many more steps that will ready Indian companies for offering transformational services," he added.
