Sun has unveiled its 'Galaxy' line of Sun Fire x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers powered by AMD Opteron processors and the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS). The Sun Fire X4100 M2, Sun Fire X4200 M2 and Sun Fire X4600 M2 servers with on-chip virtualisation support set new standards for energy efficiency, as per the statement issued by the company. Sun claims 'Galaxy' is designed for virtualisation, web infrastructure and High Performance Computing (HPC) and such.

According to the company, Sun Fire server line is a solution for consolidation and virtualisation projects that are common in enterprise datacenters, and often act as competitive differentiators. For example:

  • The Sun Fire X4600 M2 server is a 16-way 4U server that is capable of consolidating applications that have been running on more than 50 legacy x86 servers, onto one system. It offers twice the compute density in the same size footprint compared to four-processor servers from HP and IBM.
  • The Sun Fire X4100 M2 and Sun Fire X4200 M2 servers utilise the advantages of AMD's Direct Connect Architecture. Integration of memory controllers and use of less power-hungry components allows for much lower power consumption.
  • Additionally, under full load, the two-socket Sun Fire servers demonstrate better scalability, with the ability to consolidate up to 22 legacy servers using VMware.

The Sun Fire X4100 M2, Sun Fire X4200 M2 and Sun Fire X4600 M2 servers are pre-installed with the Solaris 10 OS, in addition to running standard distributions of Linux and Windows, to offer customers investment protection. In addition, the servers support virtualisation technologies, including VMware, Microsoft Virtual Server and XEN, the company said.

The Sun Fire X4100 M2 and Sun Fire X4200 M2 servers are available now. Entry-level pricing starts at USD 2,595 and USD 2,995, respectively. The Sun Fire X4600 M2 server will be available in early November.
