Sony said it is selling its microchips facility. The chips are used in its Playstation gaming consoles. Though a definite buyer is not known, there are rumours that Toshiba is buying the chips facility.
Sony wants to sell the business as it wants to concentrate on developing and building image sensor chips used in digital cameras and camcorders. The sale of its microchip business is intended to keep off from costly semiconductor business.
According to Japanese business paper, Nikkei, Toshiba might buy Sony’s assets for about USD 869.7 million.
It is also learned that Sony will tie up with Toshiba to secure a stable supply of chips for its gaming business, after the sale. |
